What can go in a dumpster

- Household junk and furniture
- Drywall, lumber, trim and flooring
- Carpet and padding
- Roofing shingles (watch weight)
- Yard waste: brush, limbs, sod
- Cabinets, doors and windows
- Cardboard and ordinary trash

No, never
- Paint, solvents and thinners
- Motor oil, antifreeze, gasoline
- Pesticides, herbicides and pool chemicals
- Batteries of any kind
- Propane tanks and fuel cans
- Asbestos and medical waste
- Fluorescent bulbs and mercury items
- Ammunition and explosives
Items that cost extra or need a call
- Tires. Most landfills refuse them or charge per tire.
- Appliances. Refrigerators, freezers and AC units must have the refrigerant removed by a pro before disposal.
- Electronics. TVs and monitors fall under electronics rules and are better recycled.
- Mattresses and box springs. Often a per-piece fee.
- Heavy fill. Concrete, dirt, rock and brick are priced on weight and should never share a box with trash.
Hazardous waste in the Brazos Valley
Paint, chemicals, oil, batteries and anything else on the no list should not go to the landfill with ordinary trash. The cities of College Station and Bryan, and the Brazos Valley Solid Waste Management Agency that runs Twin Oaks Landfill, can tell you where the current household hazardous waste drop-off or collection event is. Call them before you plan a big cleanout so you know where the bad stuff goes.
Do not hide it. Prohibited items get found at the landfill scale, and the cost lands on the renter. Tell us what you have when you book and we will tell you what to do with it.
How to load a dumpster the right way
- Put the heaviest items on the bottom and spread them out.
- Break down boxes and furniture so you are not paying to haul air.
- Keep everything below the top rail. No mountains.
- Do not mix heavy fill with household trash.
Questions people ask
Can I throw away a mattress?
Many haulers charge extra or refuse them. Ask us when you book and we will tell you the fee, if any.
Can I put paint in a dumpster?
Liquid paint, no. Let latex paint dry out fully with kitty litter and it is usually accepted as solid waste. Oil-based paint is hazardous and must go to a hazardous waste drop-off.
What happens if I put banned items in?
We may refuse pickup until they are removed, and the landfill can charge a handling fee that gets passed along to you.
