College Station dumpster rules, permits and landfill info

Where you can set a dumpster, who regulates haulers, where your load ends up and what weight means for your bill.

The short version

  • Your own driveway or private lot: usually fine, no city permit.
  • Street, alley or right-of-way: ask the city and your HOA first.
  • Dumpster rentals go to Twin Oaks Landfill in Grimes County and are billed by weight.
  • Bryan permits roll-off providers. Use one on the list.
  • No hazardous waste, ever.

On private property, setting a container is usually straightforward. The street is where the questions start.

Where the debris goes: Twin Oaks Landfill

Almost everything we haul from College Station and Bryan goes to Twin Oaks Landfill in Grimes County, near Anderson. The landfill is owned jointly by the City of College Station and the City of Bryan and managed through the Brazos Valley Solid Waste Management Agency, or BVSWMA. Loads cross a scale. You pay by weight, which is why the included tonnage and overage rate matter more than the box size on heavy jobs.

Commercial hauler rules

Both cities regulate who can haul roll-off containers inside city limits, and the rules have tightened in recent years. Bryan publishes a list of permitted roll-off providers and says that program is separate from the city’s own trash service. College Station controls construction-debris hauling through its solid-waste ordinances and hauler agreements, which are updated by the city. These rules can change, so ask any company you rent from whether they are set up to haul inside city limits, and confirm with the city if you are unsure.

Street placement and permits

Putting a dumpster on a driveway, a yard or a job site is normally a non-event. Street parking, alleys and sidewalks are public right-of-way. Cities usually want to know first, may require a permit and can require cones, lights or reflective tape. A container left on the street without approval can get cited. We will not place a dumpster in a spot we are not comfortable with, and we will tell you who to call.

HOA and apartment rules

Subdivisions across College Station and Bryan have deed restrictions. Common ones: limit the number of days a container can sit, ban street placement, or require notice to the HOA. Apartment complexes and student housing usually need the property manager’s sign-off. Get it in writing before delivery.

Weight limits and overage

Each box comes with included tons. Past that you pay the landfill’s per-ton overage. Dense materials, such as roofing, concrete, brick and wet dirt, hit that limit quickly, so size the box to the weight and not the volume. See the sizes and prices guide.

What you cannot put in

Hazardous waste, paint, chemicals, oil, batteries, tires and refrigerant appliances stay out. The full list is on what you can and cannot throw.
